Censorship ends
at your mailbox

Welcome to Lit Resistance. We believe that stories are more than just ink on a page, they are tools for change. Sometimes, the books that people try to suppress are the ones that actually help us understand ourselves and the world around us. These stories have the power to challenge us, support us, and even save us, but they can’t do that if we let them get buried.

We’re here to keep those pages open. Inspired by the bold, grassroots energy of the 1970s, we curate celebrated books from the "banned" list and deliver them to your door. Every month, you’ll get a history of why a book was challenged, plus reflection questions and action prompts to help you turn what you read into a conversation, as well as some hand-picked extras. We aren't just building a library; we’re protecting the freedom to think for ourselves.

Whether you are here to ignite a single Spark or to lead The Resistance, you are joining a movement dedicated to the freedom of the written word.

Read boldly. Think out loud. Resist often.

Knowledge is the foundation; action is the architecture.

The Advocate is our premier toolkit for those ready to turn their reading into a movement. This isn't a subscription—it’s a curated deep-dive into the heart of social change. Inside, you’ll find two essential titles: On Book Banning by Ira Wells - a comprehensive, Canadian study on the subject of book bans, and Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi - a memoir of a subversive book club in Iran at a time when everything was under control of the State. These books are paired with exclusive Lit Resistance merch so you can wear your mission on your sleeve.

To help you bridge the gap between the page and the world, we’ve included a custom Advocacy Reflection & Action Guide. This isn’t just a write-up; it’s a tactical breakdown of the books' core themes, paired with suggestions for local advocacy, from organizing your own book circle to supporting grassroots movements in your community.

The Advocate is for the reader who knows that the final chapter of any great book is written in the streets.

What They Tried to Remove

These stories are pulled from classrooms, challenged in libraries, and removed from shelves because they speak honestly about identity, justice, history, and humanity.

A banned book is rarely dangerous because of what it says—it becomes dangerous because of what it makes people think. Censorship thrives when curiosity is replaced by fear, and when a few people decide what everyone else should be allowed to learn.

At Lit Resistance, we believe those are exactly the stories worth protecting. Reading widely, especially the books that make people uncomfortable, makes us better, more empathetic humans. It creates stronger communities, deeper conversations, and a better understanding of the world around us.

We’re here to keep these books in circulation and in your hands, because access to stories should never be treated like a privilege. It should be a right.

From the Curator’s Desk

I’m a social worker, community organizer, and lifelong believer in the power of stories.

For years, I’ve worked in mental health and community wellbeing, helping people find connection, understanding, and belonging. Again and again, I’ve seen how stories can open minds, build empathy, and create real change.

As conversations around censorship and challenged books continue to grow across Canada, I felt the need to do more than just watch it happen. Lit Resistance was created as a way to turn reading into action: a space where curiosity, conversation, and community come together.

I believe the books that make people uncomfortable are often the ones we need most.

Reading shouldn’t be a solitary act. It should be a rallying cry.
